The practice of ventilation shutdown, in which barns were closed up and steam was pumped in, killing pigs via overheating and suffocation by Iowa Select Farms gained international media attention and the practice was stopped thanks to Linda Cridge and other activists and whistleblowers who risked their freedom to record it and bring this atrocity to the public's attention. Iowa Select Farms then pointed to the American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines saying they were following veterinary approved protocols. Veterinarians were outraged that their profession was lending legitimacy to this practice and over 1500 veterinarians have signed onto Veterinarians Against Ventilation Shutdown (vavsd.org) asking the AVMA to re-classify ventilation shutdown as a "not recommended" form of depopulation. The proposal was brought to the AVMA House of Delegates and it was the first time in history the HOD refused to hear a late submission. The issue will be brought up again at the end of July. We will talk to Linda Cridge and get her side of the story. She will share her experience with Lucas Walker, the pig farmer and whistleblower who sought out activist help, and her interactions with local police. Bring your questions, this should be an interesting conversation! Join us via zoom on July 14th at 5:00pm Pacific Time.
