Veterinary Student Support

Medical training and culture have been shown to reduce empathy and stunt moral development. As a result, doctors are more likely to be complacent in committing acts of harm against those they serve while being resistant to change harmful systems they were forced to rationalize and participate in. But veterinarians and veterinary students are joining together to change this!

Most veterinary schools, including some of the best schools that have publicly stated that they no longer use these methods, still use outdated teaching methods that involve killing animals for student training.

Some teaching methods ignore modern animal welfare research and cause needless harm to animals.

Have you ever suffered bullying or retaliation for choosing not to harm animals at your school due to your religious or ethical beliefs? Tell us about it, anonymously or not.

Elie Wiesel says, “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” He also says, “Never allow anyone to be humiliated in your presence.”

“The antidote to shame is empathy…Shame needs you to believe that you’re alone. Empathy is a hostile environment for shame.” — Brene Brown
